Navigating Money, Banking, Benefits, and Mental Illness: What You Need to Know
Thursday, April 30, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM PT
Presented by Ruth Daugherty, Northwest Access Fund, Annie Harper, Yale University, Becky Sladek, University of Washington, and Jennifer Graves, University of Washington.
People living with mental illness often face complex financial realities shaped by hospitalization, poverty, public benefits, and limited access to financial systems. This session brings together research and frontline practice to explore how mental illness influences financial experiences, decision-making, and stability. Presenters will examine systemic barriers such as banking access and disability benefits, while grounding the conversation in the real-world realities of living on public benefits. Participants will leave with practical insight into how to offer informed, compassionate, and realistic financial support.
